The chapters draw from qualitative research, carried out in , having Laranjal do Jari, a town in the Amazon, as its focus. The town happens to be close to big factories in an industrial project, dealing with cellulose and kaolin in Brazil.
GRUPESQ was born in when a group of teachers and students in the Graduate Program of Education at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora started a project in an effort to study education from a cultural perspective beyond the school walls.
This Forum meets every two years in June. The last one, in June , focused on educational, health and environmental issues. In this book a group of associate researchers are sharing what was learned from an exploratory study, done by using techniques of qualitative research, and looking at the town as a whole. The town had already been the target of studies that had quantified most of the problems there.
However, what was lacking was a deep understanding of the meaning of being there in a shantytown, living in small stilt houses when other spots in the region look more suitable for their housing.
